| Before the start of the next school year, all students entering 7th - 12th grade are required to get a Tdap shot. What exactly is a Tdap shot? Tdap is a vaccine that protects against three dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). This new requirement is aimed to protect the people in our community from whooping cough, a contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits that can last for months. In recent years, whooping cough has been proliferating in the U.S., and many schools in California alone were forced to shut down due to the overwhelming outbreak of whooping cough.
[Still waiting on quotes from students and staff, they'll be in soon!]
Undoubtedly, this new requirement is incredibly important in maintaining the health and safety of our community. If there is anybody without proof of immunization before next year, they will not be allowed to start school until proof is provided. Although this issue is somewhat bleak and grim, it'll ultimately save our school and keep our city flourishing. Stay safe, stay healthy, and save the country! |

Sophomore Priscilla Yon Bai "got this vaccine when [she] was in third grade, so [she has] to get it again." Priscilla said "I'm terribly afraid of shots and I'm is not looking forward to it, but I know this requirement is a great way to make sure that everyone stays healthy." [still more coming]

Tdap is a vaccine that protects against three dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). This new requirement is aimed to protect the people in our community from whooping cough, a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes violent coughing fits that can last for months. In recent years, whooping cough has been proliferating in the U.S., and many schools in California alone were forced to shut down due to the overwhelming outbreak of whooping cough.
Sophomore Priscilla Yon Bai "got this vaccine when [she] was in third grade, so [she has] to get it again." Priscilla said "I'm terribly afraid of shots and I'm is not looking forward to it, but I know this requirement is a great way to make sure that everyone stays healthy." When asked about the gravity of the issue, AUSD Superintendent Joel Shawn said "our student's health is our top priority and we encourage all incoming 7th through 12th grade students to be vaccinated...or make sure their inoculations are up to date and have the required documentation. Students should do this now and not wait till the summer, when doctors and clinics may be very busy handling these new requirements. New state law requires schools to check that students are properly protected from pertussis before permitting them to attend school next fall (2011)."
Undoubtedly, this new requirement is incredibly important in maintaining the health and safety of our community.
