PostSubject: Perseverance and the virtue of hard work   Sat May 14, 2011 10:45 pm

There is no replacement for hard work. Long hours toiling away at a specific task simply cannot be replaced by any other means. I feel that hard work has no substitute and that it is necessary to being successful. Hand in hand with hard work is perseverance. Perseverance is equally as important as hard work because without it one cannot be motivated to keep working towards a goal. Moreover, perseverance shows that a person is willing to commit fully to something that they take up as a task.
There are many great role models who exemplify perseverance and hard work. My personal favorite is the tennis player, Roger Federer. Roger Federer works tirelessly off the court and off the court in order to become an expert at the sport of tennis. Spending over 7 hours on the court sometimes, Federer is not only committed wholeheartedly to tennis, but he strives to be the best. Never giving up despite how tough the situation may get, Federer can be relied on to persevere through extremely difficult matches that others would not be able to win. Federer’s goal is to be the very best and wants to do something that he can be stand out in and be recognized in. He has worked tirelessly towards this goal in tennis, as he set a number of new records himself. However, he has only been able to become the best because of the hard work that he put into the sport and how many tough situations he has managed to persevere through. Hard work and perseverance are the true keys to his success and without these essential traits, Federer would be nothing near how successful as he is today.
Another example of why I feel that hard work and perseverance are important can be observed from my experiences throughout high school. In my opinion, there are two types of successful students. There are the natural geniuses who are innately successful at their school work. Then there are the students who realize that they are not naturally smart and in order to counteract this deficiency, they labor tirelessly in order to even the playing field. However, the students who are forced to work hard in order to be successful are ultimately more successful. This is because natural intelligence does not foster good work habits and as a result of this, these students often become prone to procrastination and find themselves extremely easily distracted. On the other hand, the students who are used to working hard, and persevering through stressful situations find themselves able to adapt to hardships better. They have better work habits and as a result, they often times are more successful than their naturally intelligent classmates.
I believe that there is no substitute for hard work and that it is essential to doing well in life. All of the time that we pour into studying eventually does pay off in some form another. Therefore hard work and perseverance are traits that aid us in being more successful. It is important to foster these traits from a young age, but if not, it is good to get started because they are essential to success.
