Other than their revealing uniforms, the sports of cross-country and water polo have nearly nothing in common. However, Coach Raymond Mynster made the transition from training the girls of Varsity Cross Country to Boys Varsity Water Polo this season, and the team has begun to take steps in the right direction.

The team’s current overall record is 3-6, a step forward from last season, when the team finished a dismal 2-20. However, the team still has room to grow and is hungry for more. “I feel the team has improved from last season, but they still have more growth in them,” Coach Mynster said. "If they keep working hard, they have the potential to make CIF this season."

On Oct. 12, the boys took on John Burroughs in a thrilling match that went into overtime. Down by one, Connor Bodenshot tied the game with a last second goal. In overtime, AHS went up by one, only to lose in a heartbreaker, 11-10. Sophomore Clifford Ly said, "We figured out their defense, and adjusted accordingly. We put a good shooter on point and he shot the ball well."
To qualify for CIF would be an enormous leap forward from last season's debacle. Coach Mynster believes that the boys should focus on the current season, and qualifying for CIF, rather than last year's disappointing season. "I expect the team to continue working hard and to shoot for CIF this season," he stated. He also said the team should work on "being more aggressive" because "the referees aren't calling light fouls this season." Clifford said, "We have a very young and inexperienced team. We need to focus, because we have a lot of potential."
After ? years of coaching Girls Varsity Cross Country, Coach Mynster was approached with the opportunity to coach water polo. " I had played for three years in high school, and a little in college," he said. "Also, with knee injuries from basketball, it was sometimes quite painful to be running. I get in with the athletes to show them exercises, and this is not a problem for my knee."
A key component to this season's resurgent squad is a strong defense. "We have a solid defense and good goalies," Clifford said. "We definitely have a stronger team this year." Clifford also noted that the team has already recorded more victories than it finished with at the end of the season. There is no doubt that the team has taken strides, or should i say strokes, in the right direction.
