PostSubject: Girls Basketball Preview   Sun Nov 07, 2010 11:18 pm

Despite having yet to start its season, the Girls Varsity Basketball team is still working hard to attain their goal of making it to the CIF playoffs. Since the ending of their regular season, the girls have worked hard to emerge victorious in 29 out of the 34 games they played. Though impressive, Coach Don Young stated that “it’s what [them team does] during the real season that counts”.
Practicing at least two times a week for two hours, our Lady Apaches are ultimately focused on this season’s goal: to obtain a position in the CIF playoffs. Finishing fifth in league the past two seasons, our girls were only one spot away from doing so. Last season, the team suffered a loss to CIF champs Santa Monica High School which “was a great learning experience for our girls and really made them work harder,” said Coach Young.
The Girls Varsity Basketball team really took advantage of their off-season to strengthen their defense as well as their shooting skills by spending three hours a week solely on shooting. “Defensively we are going to press a lot and utilize different half court traps,” planned Coach Young. The team also features four solid 3-point shooters, seniors Joy Kang, Julianna Okamoto, Dana Yamada, and sophomore Melody Chang as well as mid-point shooters senior Melody Cazarin and sophomore Claiborne Huynh. The team appears, obviously, very well-rounded as Captain Julianna Okamoto added, “We have a really balanced team this year. We have lots of height, good ball handlers, and good shooters.”
With the excitement of the season starting, the team strives to maintain their team motto: “Together”. Coach Young wanted to remind the girls and coaches alike that despite whether they “win or lose, [they’re there] for each other”. He elaborated, “It’s great to see the girls put the team first and how they back each other on and off the court,”
Our Lady Apaches begin their season on Nov. 29 at Glendale High School and play their first home game on Dec. 6 against South Pasadena High School. Remember to come out and support because their coming season is sure to be a success.
