PostSubject: Girls Varsity Basketball   Thu Dec 02, 2010 10:58 pm

It was once a common misconception that female sports were not equivalent to male sports in intensity, effort, and excitement, but if any sports on campus should be recognized for their vast improvement through the years, it should be none other than Girls Varsity Basketball. Just four years ago, during Coach Don Young’s first year as Head Coach of the team, the team finished dead last in league, emerging victorious in just one league game. So it is no small feat that for the past two years, our Girls Varsity Basketball team has finished 5th in league, merely one spot from participating in the league play-offs. Last season, it endured a loss to Santa Monica High School, the current league champions, trailing 35 points behind. Though, the loss has only encouraged the girls to train with a renewed effort. Said Coach Young, “It was a great learning experience and made [the girls] work harder.” Senior captain Julianna Okamoto added, “I think it's important that we don't get too down on ourselves after a loss. We need to learn from it, move on, and not make the same mistakes again.”
This season looks promising enough as our Lady Apaches took the off-season league by storm, coming out victorious in 29 out of the 35 games they played. Though, such success is not reaped without real effort and discipline. The girls even practiced during summer break: twice a week for two hours each. Summer practices were really devoted to improving both the team’s defense and shooting skills.
As their season has already begun, the team has upped the practice hours from four hours a week to at least 14 hours a week, coming in for an hour in the morning, two hours after school, and even on Saturday to do so. During said practice, Coach Young focuses on strengthening the offensive plays and sets, but the team possesses a greater talent, a secret weapon even. Sophomore Claiborne Huynh revealed, “We have the speed. Other schools are also as fast but our defense is impeccable and that's how we score. [We] steal the ball and hopefully there will be a fast break.” The team also features several shooters who, impressively, average about 20 points in each game.
With five new members, including freshman Maddie Bruce, sophomores Claiborne Hyunh, Melody Chang, and juniors Katrina Wong and Kristine Lai, the team boasts receivers of the Frosh/Soph MVP Award (Melody Chang), Frosh/Soph Defense Award (Claiborne Huynh), and the Arroyo MVP (Julianna Okamoto) to name a few. Julianna assessed, “We have a great team and the whole team agrees that we have a shot at winning league.” She continued, “We have a really balanced team this year. We have lots of height, good ball handlers, and good shooters.”
In contrast to previous years, this is the first that the senior class will have started and ended with Coach Young as their head coach. He sentimentally stated, “I can't say enough about my seniors: Danielle Lee, Joy Kang, Melody Cazarin, Dana Yamada, and Julianna Okamoto. Every coach has a vision but these ladies are the heart and soul of the team.”
On Monday, Nov. 29, our Lady Apaches played their first game away at Glendora High School. The team emerged victorious with a 33 point lead, ending the five year slum of defeat. INSERT MORE GAME STATS, etc.
With two years of coming in second to the play-offs, the third time is sure to be the charm.

But if any sport on campus should be recognized for their vast improvement through the years, it should be none other than the Girls Varsity Basketball team. Just four years ago, the team finished last in the league, winning just one league game. So it is no small feat that for the past two years, the girls have finished 5th in league, merely one spot from participating in the league play-offs because it endured a loss to Santa Monica High School, the current league champions. However, the loss has only encouraged our Lady Apaches to train with a renewed effort. Team captain senior Julianna Okamoto added, “I think it's important that we don't get too down on ourselves after a loss. We need to learn from it, move on, and not make the same mistakes again.”

As its season has already begun, the team has upped the practice hours from four to at least fourteen hours a week. During practices, Coach Don Young focuses on strengthening the offensive plays and sets, but the team possesses a greater talent—a secret weapon, even. Sophomore Claiborne Huynh revealed, “We have the speed. Our defense is impeccable and that's how we score. [We] steal the ball and hopefully there will be a fast break.”

In contrast to previous years, this is the first that the senior class will have started and ended with Coach Young as their coach. He stated, “I can't say enough about my seniors: Danielle Lee, Joy Kang, Melody Cazarin, Dana Yamada, and Julianna. These ladies are the heart and soul of the team.” The seniors strive to, Dana said, “end [their] high school careers on a positive and strong note.” She continued, “We as a team have a high chance of winning or at least being in the top [of our] league.”

On Monday, Nov. 29, our Lady Apaches played their first game away at Glendora High School. The team emerged victorious with a 33-point lead, ending its five year slum, as Dana justified that Glendora is “a team that we have lost to almost every year.”

On Monday Dec. 7, the girls faced off with South Pasadena High School, a team who they had last time lost to, and this time defeated, leading 62-44.

With two years of coming in second to participating in the play-offs, this coming third try is sure to be the charm.

Thanks Jasmine!

It was once a common misconception that female sports were not equivalent to male sports in intensity, effort, and excitement. But if any sport on campus should be recognized for their vast improvement through the years, it should be none other than the Girls Varsity Basketball team. Just four years ago, the team finished last in the league, winning just one league game. So it is no small feat that for the past two years, the girls have finished 5th in league, merely one spot from receiving an automatic bid to the league play-offs. Though they applied to be an at-large team, but because it endured a loss to Santa Monica High School, the current league champions, they could not make it through to the play-offs. However, the loss has only encouraged our Lady Apaches to train with a renewed effort. Team captain senior Julianna Okamoto added, “I think it's important that we don't get too down on ourselves after a loss. We need to learn from it, move on, and not make the same mistakes again.”

On Monday Dec. 6, the girls faced off with South Pasadena High School, a team who they had last time lost to, and this time defeated, leading 62-48.

With two years of coming in close to participating in the play-offs, this coming third try is sure to be the charm.
