EPA Takes Actions to Regulate Perchlorate in Drinking Water
By: Justin Park

Early February, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took actions to curb the amount of toxins that are present in drinking water and public water wells that can harm humans. The EPA also set out to eliminate further contaminants in drinking water that could prove fatal if consumed. One of the chemicals present in water is perchlorate, which is particularly dangerous to pregnant women, infants, and children.

Research by the Food and Drug Administration has shown that perchlorate contamination has been found in the drinking water of at least 20 states in the U.S. Perchlorate is a remnant of California's manufacturing, aerospace, and military bases most commonly found in groundwater, surface water, and soil. It can inhibit thyroid hormone production which can lead to lower IQ's and developmental delays in infants. California Senator Barbara Boxer acknowledge the EPA's action by showing her gratefulness at the advent of the government acting to protect families from chemicals such as perchlorate.

Scientists mention that the perchlorate contamination has occurred because of industrial users of the chemical that dump their waste in unlined pits that do not isolate biohazards. The most heavily affected regions have been Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Sacramento counties.

The EPA hopes that their efforts will largely decrease the exposure of health-hazards in drinking water. They plan to lower the amount of perchlorate in drinking water by as much as 94% within the next two years. Environmental safety is of major concern, however, bills and regulations are being brought up to counter the threat that pollution like perchlorate-dumping pose.

Try to get more student quotes, ask them whether or not they think their drinking water is safe, do they know what is in their drinking water, etc, things to make this article more relatable to students.
add a bit more meat to it too. define perchlorate in terms middle schoolers can understand. try to make your tone a little friendlier and less scientific. it's hard finding that balance of voice and style and informative for a news article, but you're almost there.
in terms of critique, work on organization. one idea per parargaph, and group similar ideas in the same paragraph.

email me if you have any other questions, preferably with your article attached because i will be without a computer up in Berkeley

news editors: *I "fattened" up the article quite a bit if that's alright, let me know if you need more friendliness

EPA Takes Actions to Regulate Perchlorate in Drinking Water
By: Justin Park

Have you ever wondered about the contents in your drinking water? Did you know that there are an abundant number of chemicals that dwell in the very water you consume? Well, the government has known about this for the past decade yet no one ever bothered to take an action to stop it. Therefore, the drinking water, even to this day, has been ridden with chemicals and other not necessarily harmful paraphernalia.

Eventually in early February, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took actions to curb the amount of toxins that are present in drinking water and public water wells. The EPA also set out to eliminate further contaminants in drinking water that has a chance to be dangerous if consumed. One of the chemicals present in water is perchlorate, which is particularly dangerous to pregnant women, infants, and children.

Wait, but what exactly is perchlorate? Well, perchlorates are salts that are derived from perchloric acids which are similar to sulfuric acids. Perchlorate, the contaminant ruining stores of water throughout the nation can be used in anything explosive. The chemical and its salts are used for rocket propellants, missiles, fireworks, matches, flares, and pyrotechnics. When consumed, it can decrease the production of hormones that are needed for regular metabolism in adults as well as mental functioning. Another shocker, this inhibition of thyroid hormone production can lead to lower IQ's and developmental delays in infants.

Research by the Food and Drug Administration has shown that perchlorate contamination has been found in the drinking water of at least 20 states in the U.S. California Senator Barbara Boxer acknowledge the EPA's action by showing her gratefulness at the advent of the government acting to protect families from contaminants such as perchlorate. Soon, there will be no reason to fear this particular agent because the EPA will regulate the perchlorate level in California to a mere six micrograms per liter, which is really not as much as some would believe.

Scientists mention that the perchlorate contamination has occurred because of industrial users of the chemical that dump their waste in unlined pits that do not isolate biohazards. It is a remnant of California's manufacturing, aerospace, and military bases and is most commonly found in groundwater, surface water, and soil and was most likely dispersed as a result of its widespread uses. The most heavily affected regions have been Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Sacramento counties.

The EPA hopes that their efforts will largely decrease the exposure of the minor health-hazards in drinking water. They plan to lower the amount of perchlorate in drinking water by as much as 94% within the next two years. Environmental safety is of major concern, and therefore, bills and regulations are being brought up to counter the threat that pollution like perchlorate-dumping pose. It is a definite possibility that within a couple of years, this threat can be successfully eradicated and everyone will be able to drink water without worrying about this certain chemical.

Have you ever wondered about the contents in <of, not in> your drinking water? Did you know that there are an abundant number of chemicals that dwell in the very water you consume? Well, the government has known about this for the past decade yet no one ever bothered to take an action to stop it. Therefore, the drinking water to this day has been ridden <i think you mean riddled with> with chemicals and other potentially harmful paraphernalia <this isnt really used properly, say 'substances' or something instead>.

Eventually in early February, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took actions to curb the amount of toxins present in drinking water and public water wells. The EPA also set out to eliminate further contaminants in drinking water that has a chance to be <of being, not to be> dangerous if consumed. One of the chemicals present in water is perchlorate, which is particularly dangerous to pregnant women, infants, and children.

Wait, but what exactly is perchlorate? Well, perchlorates are salts that are derived from perchloric acids <comma here> which are similar to sulfuric acids. Perchlorate, the contaminant ruining stores of water throughout the nation <comma here> is most often found in anything explosive. The chemical and its salts are used for rocket propellants, missiles, fireworks, matches, flares, and pyrotechnics. It can decrease the production of hormones that are needed for regular metabolism in adults, mental function, developmental processes in infants, and this inhibition can lead to lower IQs.

Research by the Food and Drug Administration has shown that perchlorate contamination has been located <misused, just say 'found'> in the drinking water of at least 20 states in the U.S. <change to United States, for a minute i couldnt tell the sentence had ended> California Senator Barbara Boxer acknowledged the EPA's action by displaying her gratefulness at the advent of the government acting to protect families from contaminants such as perchlorate. Soon, there will be no reason to fear this agent because the EPA will regulate the perchlorate level in California to a mere six micrograms per liter.

Scientists mention that the perchlorate contamination has occurred because of industrial users of the chemical that dump their waste in unlined pits that do not isolate biohazards <suggested rephrasing: ___ has occurred because industrial users dump their chemical waste in unlined pits that do not isolate biohazards>. It <'it' is ambiguous. use perchlorate> is a remnant of California's manufacturing, aerospace, and military bases and is most commonly found in groundwater, surface water, and soil. The most heavily affected regions have been Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Sacramento counties.

The EPA hopes that their <its> efforts will largely decrease the exposure of the minor health-hazards <no hyphen> in drinking water. They plan to lower the amount of perchlorate in drinking water by as much as 94% within the next two years. Environmental safety is of major concern, and therefore, bills and regulations are being brought up to counter the threat that pollution like perchlorate-dumping pose. It is a definite possibility that within a couple of years, this threat will be successfully eradicated and everyone will be able to drink water without worrying about perchlorate and other contaminants.

<u have a tendency to use a lot of prep phrases and thats, which clutter up ur writing. for ex: Scientists mention that the perchlorate contamination has occurred because of industrial users of the chemical that dump their waste in unlined pits that do not isolate biohazards. California Senator Barbara Boxer acknowledged the EPA's action by displaying her gratefulness at the advent of the government acting to protect families from contaminants such as perchlorate.
try to condense ur sentences next issue (i get that u cant change everything now), when u keep adding on details like this it makes it hard to understand ur main point>

Rewrote your intro to this, compare it with your previous one to see how you can improve it.

"When you look inside a glass of water, chances are you don’t see toxic chemicals floating around amongst ice cubes. Despite its pristine appearance, however, our drinking water contains many pollutants that are harmful to our health. While this is news to many people, this knowledge has circulated government agencies for years, yet no major efforts have been made to put an end to it. Until now."
